Edinboro opens new parenting room by Anna Ashcraft

Edinboro University implemented a new Parenting program, as well as opened a new parenting resource room in Ghering Health and Wellness Center at the end of March.

The parenting program is intended for college students with children or who will soon be parents, to help them finish their degrees. Students are encouraged to schedule monthly appointments at Ghering to help with prenatal care and childcare advice. Access to resources is also available. Any student, faculty and staff member with children or expecting is eligible for the program.

Parents who enroll in this program and are in need will receive a free car seat, diaper bag, diapers, wipes, baby food and a hat. They will also be able to obtain food from Edinboro’s on-campus food pantry and will have access to the newly opened parent resource room. Enrolling in the program is as easy as calling or going into Ghering and signing up for it.

The parent resource room grand opening was held on March 30, 2016. Hermitage House Youth Services helped raise money for the room and attended the grand opening. The room is located across the hall from Ghering Health Center and was created to help assist students who are pregnant or have children by providing them with a safe environment on campus.

The room will include breastfeeding space, toys, and a television with DVD player, children books, a refrigerator, a microwave, a sink, and a comfortable place for families to relax.

“They have some research studies that they have done just to see how it is for a student who is also a parent. They found out that its really hard and they want to make sure that the student can stay in school,” Amanda Ferguson, graduate assistant for Ghering Health and Wellness said.

Kahan Sablo, Vice President for Student Affairs, offered a statement in a press release: “Our ultimate goal is to keep student parents on track with degree progression without compromising their most important responsibility— the care and safety of their sons and daughters.”

For more information on the new parenting program or the parenting resource room contact Ghering for more information. The room is open as long as Ghering is open, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m and Saturday and Sunday from 3 – 10.
