On Tuesday, April 18, the annual competition for the Esther Alice Estock Scholarship was held in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center Recital Hall.

Since its creation in 1983, the scholarship has been given out yearly at the end of the spring semester. Last year’s winner was bagpiper Allyson Crowley-Duncan.

The Estock award is meant to recognize an outstanding music major at Edinboro University, and is open to sophomore music students performing with a GPA of 3.01 or higher.

Student competitors perform 15 minutes of music with the option of an accompanist, from three to five songs depending on the length of each.

The competition was judged by seven of the school’s music instructors: Dr. Daniel Burdick, Dr. Sarah Schouten, Mr. Howard Lyon, Ms. LeAnne Winstrom, Dr. Elizabeth Etter, Dr. Meghan DeWald and the department chair, Dr. Patrick Jones.

This year, the competition had three entries; vocalists Kaitlyn Hallock and Abigail Kraeer, and trumpet player Matthew Lowther.

The students performed works by a variety of different composers, including Strauss, Schubert and Mendelssohn.

All the competitors will be notified of the results of the competition will be announced at the beginning of June.
