The Edinboro women’s soccer team opened up the homecoming athletics with a 1-0 win Friday afternoon against Bloomsburg. The Scots are now 10-2-0 overall and 9-2-0 in the conference.
“We started out brilliantly. We were really, really, really good,” head coach Gary Kagiavas said.
Alex Brown opened the match by singing the national anthem and then four minutes into the game scored the lone goal on a penalty kick. It marks her sixth goal of the year.
Kagiavas noted they had two more good chances that they should have scored on and he was bewildered on how they did not find the back of the net.
In the final minutes of the game Bloomsburg had a few chances to tie, which they were unable to capitalize on.
Kagiavas said since the roster isn’t very big, and they just played Mercyhurst two days prior, the team started running out of legs late in the game.
Bloomsburg started subbing a lot more in the second half to try and wear Edinboro down. By the end of the game, Kagiavas said the team was just holding on and doing what they could to prevent the Huskies from tying it up.
The Huskies’ Emily Potter hit a cross at the 17-minute mark, which caused a fray for the ball. The ball eventually rolled into the left post and Edinboro was able to clear it.
In the final minute goalkeeper Sarah Baskey made a dive for the ball, but was not able to come up with it. Bloomsburg’s Jessica Supp fired a point blank shot, which appeared destined to go in the net, but Edinboro’s Katie Felitsky was there to make the defensive save inches before the ball was going to cross the goal line.
“We got a bit lucky there,” Kagiavas said. “Within a span of a couple of minutes they hit the crossbar, they hit the post, and we cleared one off the line.”
Kagiavas felt if the game would have gone into overtime Edinboro would have lost. The Scots are now playing without freshmen Morgan Hamker and Danielle Chatten.
