As COVID-19 (commonly known as coronavirus) has spread to over 100 countries, including the U.S., China, Japan and Italy, Edinboro University’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) has cancelled all university-affiliated travel programs through the end of May 2020.

In a March 3 email to all Edinboro faculty, staff and students, University President Dr. Guiyou Huang said that because of the spread of coronavirus, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) asked colleges to consider the cancellation of international travel programs. The email read, in part: “Based on this recommendation and after careful consideration regarding the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, University officials have decided to cancel ALL university-affiliated travel programs through the end of May 2020. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution."

It continued, “As Spring Break approaches, we urge you to avoid all nonessential travel.

Trips affected by these cancellations include the spring break trip to Costa Rica, as well as various trips in May to Italy and Greece, Iceland, London and Botswana. In addition, the honors program trip to Toronto has been cancelled.

In an email to honors students, Dr. Roger Solberg, the director of the honors program, said, “We were all looking forward to the trip, and I share your disappointment, but given the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 virus, it's better to be safe than sorry.

While it is difficult to predict the future spread of the virus, caution is the game plan for the university. Huang’s email concluded, “Although there is no current threat to the Edinboro community or the region, the ERT is proactively managing preparedness efforts to best ensure the safety and well-being of our campus. We will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as necessary.” In a follow-up email on March 6, it also stated that "University officials are working with APSCUF on a plan to temporarily transition to online course delivery in the event of temporary suspension of in-person classes."

West Chester University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education with Edinboro, recently made the decision to transition to remote learning for the rest of the spring semester. They are located on the southeastern edge of the state.

The CDC recommends the following regarding coronavirus (courtesy the university email):

— Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, especially after using the restroom, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
— Use an alcohol-based sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.
— Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
— Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
— Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and discard used tissues immediately.
— Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in your home.
— Don’t share food or drink.
— Stay home when you are sick.
— Get the flu vaccination.
