Winding down after two extended trips to Michigan State and Louisville, the Edinboro men’s and women’s cross country teams took the stage once again at the Lake Erie Invitational, looking for their first team victory of the year. Painesville Country Club would be the setting as they competed in their final meet before their championship season.

Falling short of their goal, the men would finish the day in third place, behind nationally ranked Walsh and Ashland University. On the women’s side, the team finished fifth out of 15. After mishaps on the course, the women’s race was cut short from 6 kilometers to 4.3.

“You see, the lead car, it went the wrong way,” men’s runner Bryan Geehrer said.

Both snagging top 10 finishes in their respective races, Greehrer’s time of 26:34.31 would be good for seventh, while Emma Sullivan’s time of 16:35.53 would put her in fourth place overall.

The next four after Geehrer would all finish in the top 20. Just finishing under 27 minutes, Corey Wefing would slot into 11th place overall. Eugene Baritot and Jon Gusew continued their inter-team competition as they finished three seconds apart. Baritot placed 15th while Gusew got 17th.

Steven Scheetz would be the final scoring competitor for the Scots, finishing 34th with a time of 28:10.63.

“We got a lot of guys coming up, getting primed for postseason. Steve’s been doing everything right. He’s getting his confidence up and he’ll be ready to rip come late October and early November,” Corey Wefing said.

On the women’s side, Abbey Lang and Abbey Peters continued to come through second and third for the squad. Their times were 17:22.15
and 17:28.28. Crossover athlete MaryLouise Lindner continued to contribute to the depleted team, placing 29th overall. Rounding out the top five, German native Pia Briger placed 64th.
