Edinboro Falls to West Virginia in Season's Final Home Dual by Michael McLaughlin
Casey Fuller defeated Connor Flynn Saturday, Feb. 20 in Fuller’s final match at McComb Fieldhouse. He was one of two Edinboro seniors to win on Saturday.

The Fighting Scots wrestling team fell to West Virginia University on senior night in their final home dual of the season by a final score of 18-14.

The match came down to the heavyweight match up of Edinboro’s Corey Beck and West Virginia’s A.J. Vizcarrondo. Usual starter Billy Miller was unavailable for the match and Warren Bosch, who started last year, was out because of a personal matter.

Beck gave up quite a bit of weight, considering he’s in the 197-pound weight range and Vizcarrondo weighed 280 going into the match. Despite the disadvantage, Beck was only down 1-0 going into the final period.

He took several shots late, but none were enough to get any points against the heavyweight. Beck fell to 3-4 on the season.

Head coach Tim Flynn said Beck was a little more agile than Vizcarrondo and took some shots late, but went on to say that it’s tough to get a guy of that size down with such a large weight difference.

In the 125 pound weight class, Sean Russell scored the only bonus points of the match by defeating WVU’s Ryan Elliott, 19-3, at 5:31 into the match. Russell improved to 24-6 on the season.

Flynn said Russell has the skill to compete at the national level. He is hopeful he will show his skill in matches to come and prove himself even more worthy of being a national level competitor.

The Mountaineers would win the next two matches at 133 and 141 pounds, with close decisions.

Patricio Lugo won a 3-2 decision over Zach Moore to give Edinboro an 8-6 lead. Lugo, ranked 18th in the nation by Intermat, used a takedown and an early third period escape to get the win.

The next match at 157 pounds was the only match of the day between two nationally ranked wrestlers. Edinboro’s Austin Matthews, ranked 16th, squared off against WVU’s Dylan Cottrell, who was ranked 17th.

Cottrell had the only takedown of the match with about one minute to go in the first period. He won in a 4-1 decision, dropping Matthews to 7-3 on the season.

Casey Fuller was one of two senior winners on Saturday, defeating Connor Flynn, 7-2, in his final match in McComb Fieldhouse. He improved to 24-7 on the season.

Vic Avery was the second senior winner on the day at 184 pounds. He posted an 8-4 decision over Bubba Scheffel to improve to 9-1 on the season. Entering the third and final period it was 2-2, but Avery dominated the last two minutes, getting two takedowns and an escape.

This match was a more offensive one for Avery, especially compared to his match against Virginia Tech.

Flynn said as he gets in more matches he gets more comfortable and has gotten better and better since coming back from his injury.

Seniors Vince Pickett (197) and Patrick Jennings (174) were unable to capture victories in their last matches in McComb Fieldhouse. Pickett is now 18-15 for the season and Jennings is 20-14.
