The Edinboro University women’s tennis team opened its 2016 PSAC season with an 8-1 defeat against local foe Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Fighting Scots are 9-4 overall for the season and 0-1 in PSAC play. The Lakers improved to 5-2 and 1-0 in the conference.

Laura Lopez registered the lone win of the afternoon for the Fighting Scots, defeating Mercyhurst’s Annie Baich by scores of 6-2 and 7-5. Lopez improved to 10-5 on the season and has now won seven of her last eight matches.

The Edinboro University women’s tennis team grabbed its 10th victory of the year on Saturday with a 6-3 decision at Davis & Elkins. The Fighting Scots used four singles victories and a pair of doubles wins to improve to 10-4. The Senators dropped to 6-8.

Edinboro head coach Lee Underwood, an alumnus of Davis & Elkins, watched as his squad captured their first-ever victory against his alma mater since the Scots’ program revival in 2010-11. Roxana Yeh (13- 3) earned her team-high 13th singles win of the season with a 6-0 and 6-2 win over Kelsie Roby.

Julia Hellstern grabbed a hard-fought victory over Elise Simon, 7-6 (6) and 6-4. Laura Lopez beat Haileigh Carper, 6-0 and 6-1, while Jelena Vucenovic took a 6-1 and 6-2 win over Amanda Fewster.

The duo of Hellstern and Lydia Browne (10-4) got their team-high tenth doubles win of the year with an 8-4 victory over Elise Simon and Marlene Ridgway. Lopez and Yeh rounded out the Edinboro victories with an 8-3 decision versus Halima Michael and Kelsie Roby.

The Fighting Scots return to PSAC action on Tuesday at California (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
