At the end of the Fall 2019 semester, the women’s basketball team had a losing record at 3-4. Maybe all they needed was a little bit of Christmas spirit to get the ship sailing.

They compiled a 4-2 record while school was in recess and headed into the Spring 2020 semester with a winning record of 7-6.

Of the six games they played over break, the Lady Scots' most notable was a conference match up against California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Fighting Scots traveled to play the 15th ranked Vulcans and came back to Edinboro victorious in a 73-72 thriller.

In this high scoring affair, Edinboro senior standout and 1,000-point scorer, Michaela Barnes, led all players with a game-high 35 points on an efficient 14-19 shooting night. Barnes also chipped in eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes of the contest.

When asked what is special for Barnes with this being her senior year, she said, “Something that is different from last year is the genuine love for each other...it’s the main reason why we are playing so well together to this point.”

Seniors Bridgette Shaffer and Cheniya Sharpe also scored in double figures for the Lady Scots, with 15 and 10 respectively.

The team's other wins came at the hands of all PSAC foes and helped propel the Lady Scots to a 5-4 conference record. On Saturday, Dec21, the ladies got their Christmas celebrations started early with a road win at Kutztown. Sophomore Monica Brown led a balanced scoring attack, which saw five players finish in double-figures, with a 16-point effort.

The remainder of the team's wins over Christmas break both came at McComb Fieldhouse in a 3-day span, from Jan6 to Jan. 8On Monday, Jan. 6, the Fighting Scots won a nailbiter, 69-66, over West Chester, and then on Wednesday, Jan8, they were victorious over Pitt-Johnstown, 86-55. Barnes led the team in scoring on both nights with 233 and 24-point performances.

Barnes continued her offensive tear that she’s been on this season, but she’s more than just the team's high scorer. “As a leader, I have always been able to lead by example in what I do on and off the court." Barnes also noted that this year is different with her being a senior captain and having to be more vocal as a leader.

In their first game of the new semester, the Lady Scots dropped a 66-63 heartbreaker at home to 8th ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) but managed to keep their momentum rolling with the near upsetBridgette Shaffer led the team with a career high 25 points on a night where she connected on seven 3-point field goals. This brought the team's record back to a .500 record at 7-7.

The Lady Scots were able to get back on track with a 63-47 win over Clarion to get back above .500, now holding an 8-7 record. Barnes notched her fourth 30-point scoring game of the season. Senior Chenyia Sharpe had a game high 13 rebounds.

With 11 conference games remaining on the schedule, the Fighting Scots sit in 5th place in the PSAC West division.
