“Just win the day.”

Justin Lustig, new head coach for the Edinboro University Fighting Scots football team, attended the PSAC Media Day at Slippery Rock University earlier this summer. This was Lustig’s first media day after taking over the team in January of this year. Since then, he’s assembled his coaching staff and had some time to evaluate his returning players in spring drills.

“We had a lot to evaluate this spring,” Lustig said. “We assembled some really talented coaches who are all committed to winning.”

The first order of business for Lustig was looking to bring a new attitude and outlook to the Fighting Scots. And if his athlete response is any indication, he’s checking off that box.

Senior linebacker Victor Hudson spoke of this feeling. “Coach has been like fresh air to the team. It’s like a whole new energy and the guys are really getting into it.”

Senior offensive lineman Zach Hartin agreed. “You can really tell things are different, I am really excited to get with the guys on the line and get to work this week.”

The PSAC yesterday their preseason polls in August. They listed Edinboro as last place in the western division, eight out of eight.

“I won’t even talk to the guys about the polls, it won’t even be a part of our conversations. It’s just numbers and opinions,” Lustig said.

“I tell the guys all the time. Just win the day, that’s all you have to do, whether it’s on the field, in the classroom or on a date with your girlfriend. Just be the best that you can possibly be.”

Lustig would continue, stating, “There are a few games we are looking forward to. Of course, this upcoming game at St. Joe’s is going to be big [as] my first game as head coach; our first home game in front of our fans; and of course Homecoming. Those are all games you really want to win as a team”

The Edinboro Fighting Scots open their 2016 campaign on the road at St. Joseph’s in Rensselaer, Indiana on Sept. 3.  The Fighting Scots’ first home game at Sox Harrison Stadium is Sept. 17, as they’ll face returning PSAC Easter Division champion, West Chester.
