The men’s tennis team defeated the Atlantic region’s second ranked team on Friday in a 5-4 decision over West Liberty University.
“All regional wins are big wins,” head coach Lee Underwood said. “I wouldn’t say it was bigger than any other.”
Edinboro came in as the fifth ranked team in the region and was able to right their wrongs after suffering a defeat to West Liberty by a score of 5-4 last year.
Underwood said he’s not really concerned with the rankings. He feels they’re as good as any team, they just have to keep bringing their game.
Sophomore Vitor Albanese, who was ranked second in the Atlantic Region in singles this past week, played a part in two Fighting Scot victories.
“He has excellent footwork. He has a lot of different speeds and spins and he’s a very fierce competitor,” Underwood said.
He beat top ranked Baptiste Perrin with two 6-4 sets in the singles match.
He then teamed up with Camilo Moncayo to defeat another top ranked opponent. They beat the pair of Andrew Ponder and Santiago Gutierrez by a score of 8-6.
The Scots also had two more singles wins and one more doubles win to defeat the Hilltoppers.
Mateus Santos beat Martin Moncayo in two sets and Kevin Mboko defeated Pablo Cimorra, also in two sets.
Mboka paired up with Mauricio Santos to down Matt Tully and Cimorra in a tight 9-8 match.
