Any time both the men’s and women’s cross country teams qualify for the national championship it is a positive.
However, this year’s performance at nationals for Edinboro was not what head coach Rick Hammer wanted.
The Edinboro men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the 2015 NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships hosted by Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Missouri on Nov. 21. The women’s team finished 21st out of 32 teams in the women’s race while the Boro men finished 24th out of 32 teams in the men’s competition.
For the ladies, individually, the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region and PSAC Women’s Athlete of the Year Ida Narbuvoll earned All-American honors as the freshman finished the 6K course at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in 21:21.3, good enough for 37th. The Norway native was the highest women’s finisher from the Atlantic Region.
The next Fighting Scot to cross the line was senior Anna Hosel, who finished 109th. Emma Sullivan (125th), Bekkah Bond (160th) and Abbey Lang (165th) were the other scorers for Boro.
“We had a tough day,” Hammer said in a release via the university’s Sports Information Department. “No one ran very well. Hopefully the feeling of finishing near the back of the national field will fuel a good track season.”
For the men, senior Elliot Martykiewicz wrapped up his collegiate cross country career with an All-American performance. The PSAC runner-up finished 19th as he finished the 10K course in 30:11.6.
“It is a great way for Elliot to end his cross country career,” Hammer said. “He has been loyal and bought in to the way we do things now over the past two and half years. His All-American was well-deserved.”
Outside of Marynkiewicz, Logan Kempney finished 107th, Corey Wefing finished 124th, Jon Gusew took 173rd and Dominic Patrick came in 207th, rounding out the scorers.
“I think the 24th place finish shows that we were lucky to be here this year,” Hammer said in the release. “I hope it is fuels some good training in the coming months as they will need it if they want to make it back to this meet in 2016. I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond to this disappointing season in the coming months of training.”
Adams State won the women’s national title while Colorado State won the men’s championship.
The meet wrapped up the 2015 cross country season for both the Edinboro men’s and women’s teams.
