There are many debates overheard in the Spectator office. This week, Anisa and Nathan take on the age-old question of which animal is a better pet.
Are you a cat or dog person? Why?
Nathan: While I enjoy both, I am a cat person. They’re so cuddly and warm, and make me happy.
Anisa: I would consider myself Switzerland in this situation. I love both cats and dogs. Growing up, we always had a cat. So, I was so used to always having a cat. However, when I moved to Edinboro two years ago, I adopted four dogs. What an adventure.
Have you ever owned a cat? A dog?
N: I have owned cats: For most of my life, I had my dear Clancy, may she rest in peace. Right now, I have the rambunctious duo of Riley and Fiona, who fit in very well.
A: Yes, I’ve been an owner of three cats: Ruby, Uni and Mr. Wiggles. Now I have four dogs: two Australian shepherds, Remy and Zoe, one puggle, Daisy, and one super handsome pitbull-lab, Jake.
Did owning either one influence you?
N: I’d say owning cats has influenced me. I see and pet them constantly, so I have an affectionate view of cats, for sure.
A: While I loved having cats growing up, I ended up with dogs when my mom passed away. Their love, affection and playful nature really made dealing with the grief more bearable.
Does the fact that dogs need to be walked/played with affect your opinion?
N: That’s just the way dogs are, so that has no bearing on my feelings for them.
A: No, I think that should be a pro, not a con. You are literally forced to be active, which I don’t view as a bad thing.
Does the fact that cats are usually more independent and reserved affect your opinion?
N: It can be a good thing. Sometimes I just want to relax and sit down, and cats are constantly doing the same thing, so I suppose the arrangement works out.
A: No, not at all. I think it can be good when you live a busy life. What turns me away from cats is the litterbox, but I still love them.
Do you hate the other animal?
N: Not at all. It’s not that I don’t care for dogs, it’s that I like cats more.
A: Nope! I hate myself for being allergic to cats and dogs, but I will suffer, because I love them.
Would you ever own the animal you like less?
N: I would. I’d love a nice Shiba Inu.
A: Obviously, because I have already owned both. I think once I go through a divorce or some middle-life crisis, I will just get a farm and dedicate my life to that.
