At the Edinboro University Student Government Association’s weekly meeting, the Love Your Melon Campus Crew asked SGA for recognition as a club. Love Your Melon is an apparel brand that is dedicated to giving hats to children battling cancer in America, as well as being a supporter of nonprofit organizations who lead the fight against pediatric cancer.
The brand’s partners include Cure Search, Pinky Swear and Be the Cure. Fifty percent of the net proceeds go to these nonprofit partners in the field of pediatric oncology, funding cancer research and also providing immediate support for families of children battling cancer.
To date, over 75,000 hats have been donated to children battling cancer, and over $1.1 million has been donated to immediate family support and pediatric cancer research. In the Erie region alone, 2,875 hats were donated.
The club is allotted 20 members and have 16 spots filled at the time. When the club receives an increase in credits, then the number of members that can enter the club will increase. Love Your Melon members also dress up as superheroes and deliver hats to children personally, and make hospital trips, as well as organized home visits.
The Love Your Melon crew becoming an official club would give them the opportunity to request rooms for meetings and attend club rush. The organization would also like to get the word out about pediatric cancer, raising awareness.
Anyone can request a hat for an individual battling cancer by visiting loveyourmelon.com. Hats are free, and all products are made in the USA. When you buy a hat, you can select Edinboro University Crew to give direct credit to the campus.
As a result of the meeting, SGA motioned to recognize Edinboro University Love Your Melon Crew as an official club.
