Review: Lecrae — All Things Work Together by Hannah Webster

                                              Rating: ★★★★★

Two-time Grammy winner Lecrae has been in the music industry since 2004, yet is still considered an underdog. It wasn’t until his 2014 album “Anomaly” hit the charts making it a number one album on several charts including the Billboard 200 and RIAA Gold certified, that Lecrae really was starting to be noticed.

Since his debut, Lecrae has released 11 albums that include crossover Christian and secular hip-hop tracks. His music aims to reach authenticity with boldness when addressing topics like abortion, poverty and daddy issues.

Lecrae recently released his latest album, “All Things Work Together” on Friday, Sept. 22. The album includes 14 songs that reflect various standout moments in his 37 years of life.

The album begins by thanking everyone who has supported him throughout his career in his song “Always Knew.” The lyrics provide a poetic understanding of Lecrae’s journey to where he is now.

Lecrae released solo track “I’ll Find You” featuring Tori Kelly in the spring, giving the pair much attention. The track offers hope for those fighting an internal battle that almost seems hopeless. The song was created in honor of their friends who were battling cancer. The music video features heart-wrenching coverage of children at St. Jude children’s hospital. The duo performed the song with a raw sound on Good Morning America last Friday morning after the album dropped at midnight.

“Just fight a little longer my friend/It's all worth it in the end/But when you got nobody to turn to/Just hold on, and I'll find you/I'll find you/I'll find you/Just hold on, and I'll find you.”

“All Things Work Together” offers a unique sound instead of the typical rap/hip-hop base dropping tunes. The songs in this album have a soothing sound while still offering the rhythm and rhyme associated with typical rap songs.

The best part about the album, however, is the depth to the lyrics. Each tune comes with a raw and authentic taste, which is guaranteed to speak to your soul. Anyone who has ever felt at a loss with their struggles will definitely be able to relate to this album.

In releasing his album, Lecrae encourages his audience to accept the journey they are a part of whether it is thorny or full of easy passage.

“It’s been said that it’s not the destination, but the journey that matters most. I used to want simple answers. I wanted everything to be black and white. But the problem is we lose the beauty of all the colors of complexity, we get caught up in trying to survive every day that we don’t see how surviving these elements has refined us, made us stronger,” said Lecrae in a short film introducing “All Things Work Together.”

He continues, saying, “The journey for a lot of us has never been easy. For some of us, pain has made us numb, death has made us cold, and our sins are our survival tactics. But that doesn't have to be the end of our story.”

As he also mentioned in the film, “Without that journey would we have found hope?” It is our responsibility to find the hope for ourselves. So dig deep into your soul, honor your weakest moments and your fondest memories by listening to this album.

This album is jam-packed with opportunity for those looking for a soul-wrenching experience to be made new. Perfect for fans of Andy Mineo, Tori Kelly, R. Kelly, Tupac, and NF. With raw and authentic lyrics, it is hard to simply focus on the sound. Lecrae’s boldness is guaranteed to make you feel “shook” for at least one song.

Standout tracks: "I’ll Find You," "Blessings," "8:28," "Can’t Stop Me Now," "Cry For You" and "Worth It"
