Rick Hammer, head coach of Edinboro University’s cross country team and the second head coach in program history, will not return to Edinboro in the fall.

His contract was not renewed by the university.

“The search (for a new coach) was announced, I think, about three or four weeks ago,” said athletic director Bruce Baumgartner, when speaking to The Spectator.

“It was nationally advertised….we stopped taking applicants and the search committee will go through the applicants.”

He continued, “I’ve heard, I have not seen personally, but I’ve heard there are well over 80 applicants.”

With alumni involved in the previous hiring process, the one following 44-year head coach Doug Watts, the subject of those former athletes applying was discussed.

“I as hiring administrator have no preconceived notions of anyone in particular,” said Baumgartner.

“It’s really wide open. Some people say an alumni would be good and others say it wouldn’t be good. So we’re really trying to find the best person to meet the needs of our student athletes and to continue our good tradition here at Edinboro University. If that’s an alumni, that would be awesome [and] if it’s not, as long as that person can do a good job and meet those needs (of student athletes) then we would be fine with that.”

Baumgartner declined to name the seven search committe members at this time. He did specify two student athletes to be on it. He stated they hope to announce the coach before “everybody leaves for finals,” but was unsure if the process would conclude before then.

After Watts announced his departure in April of 2013, Hammer was appointed in the following August.

“Coach Hammer came into a very difficult situation, following a coach like Doug Watts,” said Baumgartner.

“He had all this success. It was not a very easy task.”

Hammer previously coached at Lewis University for four years in an assistant role.
