Rose Dining Hall closes, campus dining options expand at Pogue by Amber Chisholm

“New brands, new food, new atmosphere.”

Jeff Seevers, senior director of dining services at Edinboro, spoke highly of the recent changes to the way students eat on campus.

Starting with the Cyber Café, located in Frank G. Pogue Student Center, Seevers shared that Peet’s Coffee, a California-based brand, is now being served, along with new Lakeside Bagel sandwiches arriving every morning.

Scotland Road Subs, meanwhile, in the Celtic Court main eating area offers fresh bread, salads and wraps.

Next to them is now Absurd Bird, which uses 100 percent white meat chicken.

Sushi Do is a carry-over at Edinboro, yet they’re expanding their menu with both rice and noodle bowls. They close at 10 p.m., while Absurd Bird and Scotland Road Subs will remain open until midnight.

A gluten free grab-n-go cooler is also available now, along with a Lipton Tea machine and a recently added Pepsi spire, which has 14 different flavors and four different flavor shots.

A dispenser for Bubly, Pepsi’s sparkling water, is expected in September, as is softer furniture for Celtic Court.

When asked about student feedback, Seevers said, “so far, very well received,” regarding improved hours, food quality, building graphics and more.
“Overall they’re very happy with it,” he continued.

As for Van Houten Dining Hall, there are changing specials with different named stations.

Cucina offers made-to-order pizza and pasta dishes, while Flame offers burgers, both of which will have daily specials implemented after the first week.

Innovate has a live chef with weekly alternating specials. The first week was Asian food and this week was macaroni and cheese.

Though meal prices have risen by 30 cents — Seevers says it’s due to rising food costs — meal zones have been eliminated and students eating four meals a day can use their meal swipe any time during open hours.

Ideas behind the new options go back to April 2019, and Seevers feels most confident about “customer service, student satisfaction and food safety” saying that this is the healthiest Edinboro has ever been.

The Old

Rose Dining Hall, which was housed in the bottom of the former dormitory, will no longer be a dining option for students starting this fall. The dining hall was home to a variety of eating options, including Starbucks, 2 Mato, which served made-to-order Italian food, and Mondo Subs, which served custom subs.

The Changed

The Pogue Student Center underwent renovations over the summer to expand and update the dining area. Renovations include creating an opening in the wall where diners sit in order to widen out the area, repainting the entirety of the dining hall, and the addition of new drinking fountain options.

The New

With the closing of Rose, the Pogue Student Center food court also revamped their menu, adding in two new dining choices: Absurd Bird and Scotland Road Subs. Absurd Bird offers a variety of fried chicken and food options, while Scotland Road Subs offers custom made subs similar to the ones previously offered by Mondo in Rose.
