‘Sausage Party’ a surprisingly meaty story by Gabriel Hypes

“Sausage Party” lives up to its name. There aren’t too many words to describe an R-rated animated movie where the main cast consists of talking grocery store food. But, if I had to say the first two words that come to my mind, it would be “line stepping” and, trust me, that’s in a good way.

This comedy and adventure follows the actions of Frank (Seth Rogan), a sausage, finally getting the chance to get picked in the grocery store and taken home with one of the “Gods,” the humans, to be worshiped for all eternity. Frank quickly finds that out when they are bought at the grocery store, they aren’t worshiped; they are tortured and eaten alive.

This leads to Frank leading a group of other food from various food groups — voiced by various actors, such as Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton and a lot more — on a quest to take back the grocery store and convince the rest of the foods that being bought isn’t actually a good thing.

There’s not one Seth Rogen film I have not enjoyed at least a little and “Sausage Party” is no different. It had me laughing the entire time with more than just sexual, food-based pun jokes.

For one, it was relatively surprising plot and theme wise.

The main point of the story had a very obvious religious theme that I was not expecting after watching trailers. Also, the switching of the worlds was a change of pace, going from the point of view of the food, the view of the human, and finally when the two worlds collide.

Go into “Sausage Party” like any other comedy; sport an open mind that can tune out the ridiculous plot line for the whole 90-minute run time. Watch out for the many references this movie makes, as they go by quick and often are some of the best parts.

“Sausage Party” is easily one of the funniest movies I have seen this year.
