Tennis Opens Up PSAC Play With Dominating Wins Over Kutztown and Bloomsburg by Michael McLaughlin
Mateus Santos won two singles matches as well as two doubles matches this weekend.

The men’s tennis team opened up PSAC play this weekend with two home matches in Erie against Kutztown and Bloomsburg. They defeated Kutztown, 8-1, and Bloomsburg, 7-2.

The Fighting Scots took five out of six singles matches and swept the doubles matches against Kutztown.

“We went out and did basically what we thought we could do,” Head Coach Lee Underwood said.

This was their first match back after an eight-day break, following their spring trip to South Carolina.

Underwood said he was pleased with the trip and the results.

The team beat Belmont Abbey and a nationally ranked Northwood team. Underwood also mentioned he feels that on a different day the team could have defeated George Mason, who is a division I school they played during break.

Victor Albanese, Mateus Santos, Daniel Fernandez, Mauricio Santos and Kevin Mboko each won their singles matches.

The duos of Fernandez and Mateus Santos, Albanese and Camilo Moncayo, and Mboko and Mauricio Santos each won their doubles matches against Kutztown.

“The key to our team is we’re very intense. I think our intensity level is higher than most teams that we play,” Underwood said.

Underwood said although they are two time defending PSAC champions, he does not feel they are the favorites this year because they are such a young team.
