Angela Burrows, Edinboro University vice president for marketing and communications, confirmed with The Spectator that EU has established tentative plans to demolish the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Center.

More commonly referred to as “the Dome,” the structure was completed and inflated in January 2009, while the entire project cost approximately $5 million.

“The university’s long-term plan is to replace it with a more permanent structure. In the meantime, athletics is exploring alternative spaces that would meet the needs that are currently being met by the dome,” said Burrows.

When the dome was opened for use 11 years ago, according to Burrows, it was known that the structure would be temporary. The university will consult with a structural engineer to assess the current facility and finalize plans.

According to Edinboro.edu, the dome is an “85,000 square-foot structure” and “is named for Edinboro alumnus Mike S. Zafirovski, the CEO of Nortel, whose generous contribution made construction of the facility possible.”

The university has not announced a demolition or closing date.
