Volleyball splits weekend series against Erie County rivals

On Friday night, the Edinboro women’s volleyball team began their weekend of traveling as they went to Gannon University to face off against the Golden Knights. Gannon would take the win in this match and improve their record to 20-1 overall and 9-1 in the PSAC.

Edinboro took the first set of the match 25-19, but Gannon would come back for the next three sets: 25-16, 25-8 and 25-10. After this match, Edinboro sat at 10-10 overall and 3-7 in the PSAC.

In the match, Gannon had a total of 53 kills to Edinboro’s 29 and had a total hitting percentage of .275 compared to Edinboro’s .067 percent. Cierah Jackson and Sally Sterkel both had 7 kills and 2 blocks; Jackson also had an ace. Hannah Cantrill and Paige Morris weren’t far behind as Cantrill had 6 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace, while Morris racked up a total of 5 kills and 2 blocks. Freshman Alicia Eldredge had a total of 23 assists and 5 digs in this match and sophomore Molly Breier had a total of 21 digs and 5 returns.

Edinboro traveled to Mercyhurst University in search of a win on Saturday. The team gained not only a win but swept the match 3-0 to bring their overall record to 11-10 and their record in the PSAC to 4-7. 

After Edinboro took the first set 25-15, Mercyhurst would come back in the second, but the Fighting Scots would gain the win with a score of 26-24. The last set was also very close, but ended with a score of 25-23 in Edinboro’s favor. Mercyhurst fell to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC.

Cantrill led in kills for Edinboro with a total of 12 in this match. The senior also had 2 blocks, 11 digs and 1 return. Eldredge wracked up a total of 31 assists in the match as well as 8 digs. 

Breier led in digs for the Fighting Scots in this match with a total of 20. She also had 3 assists and 1 return.

The Fighting Scots will return to McComb Fieldhouse again on Friday at 6 p.m. to face off against Lock Haven University. They will once again return home on Saturday night to play against Bloomsburg University at 7 p.m.
