The Edinboro men’s cross country team joined elite company this past Saturday after placing third overall in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The finish will send the team to the national meet in St. Leo, Florida where they will compete against an elite level of competition that includes teams like Colorado Mines, Grand Valley and Adam’s State.

Leading the way for the Scots once again was Bryan Geehrer, beating all other freshman in the race by nearly a minute. Finishing sixth overall, Geehrer ran a time of 32:57, averaging 5:24 per mile.

The next two to cross the line would be junior Corey Wefing and Gene Baritot, placing 10th and 12th. Rounding out their season well, Wefing and Baritot were able to close the gap on Geehrer, keeping them within striking distance of nationally ranked Lock Haven.

“The men took care of business today and qualified for the NCAA championships,” coach Ryan Foster said during an interview with Edinboro’s Sports Information Director Bob Shreve.

Separated by 10 seconds each, the next Scots to finish would be Jared Hallow, captain Jon Gusew and with a breakout performance, sophomore Steven Scheetz. Hallow led the way amongst the three, placing fourth amongst the Scots competitors and 20th in the region.

Gusew would be the last to represent the Scots as an all-region finisher, narrowly making the top-25. After battling a nagging injury throughout the past few weeks, Gusew managed to continue his season, scoring the final team points for Edinboro (the top 5 score).

Rounding out the squad’s final competitors would start with Sheetz and end with senior Daniel Nowak, both of which were able to help Boro, displacing competitors along the way.

Following up from before, Foster continued, stating, “Our goal was to consolidate our position as a top three team in the region and we did that today. We showed a lot of determination on one of the hardest courses in the country.”

The Scots will travel to Florida the weekend of Nov. 19 for competition on Saturday.
