Adele’s latest single, “Easy on Me, off her upcoming album put an end to her six-year musical hiatusFollowing “Hello” from 2015, the new song was released on Oct. 14 by Columbia Records. Adele showcases her individuality and vulnerability on “Easy on Me,” as she reflects on time in her life of motherhood and divorce.

The British singer song-writer is well known for her emotional, heart-wrenching ballads. Given her tendency to address heartbreak, Adele fans were more than eager to experience her new music, after news of the singer’s divorce struck in 2019.

Contributing to the trend in which she titles her albums after her age, Adele’s upcoming album is titled “30,” which happens to be how old she was at the time she filed for divorce from her ex-husband, Simon Konecki. Her fourth studio album follows suit after her earlier albums, “19,” “21,” and “25.” Adele’s comeback album “30” is scheduled for release on Nov. 19.

Adele teased “Easy on Me” and her upcoming album release with a short clip from the black and white music video on Twitter and Instagram on Oct. 5, which quickly accumulated millions of views. She went live on Instagram to answer questions from her fans before the initial release. One viewer asked what her next album would be about, to which the artist replied, “divorce, babe.”

Featuring a piano ballad, the song details a lost love, failed marriage, and the complex toll those take on children involvedShe details the experience of entering a relationship eager at a young age as she sings the chorus, “Go easy on me baby / I was still a child / Didn’t get the chance to / Feel the world around me / Had no time to choose, what I chose to do.” Anyone who has been in a failed relationship that began in their teens or young adulthood, or who was love blind can easily relate to these lines.

Adele has one of the most authentic voices of this generation that is sure to evoke emotions in anyone who listens. She shows that her voice has not aged or lost its originality in “Easy on Me,” with her warm stretched out vocals that carry you throughout the song.

The music video, directed by Xavier Dolan, shows similarities to her earlier music video, “Hello," also directed by Dolan. Adele sits in an empty house with dusty old furniture representing a transition she must make following the end of a relationship. The music video starts off in black and white, regaining its color about four minutes in. The singer eventually drives off with a trailer full of belongings as she peers into the rear-view mirror.
