Album Review: Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett – Love for Sale by Julia Carden
Album Cover: Interscope Records

Lady Gaga and jazz legend Tony Bennett team up once again for their latest collaborative album, "Love for Sale." The duo’s album was released both digitally and on cassette tape on October 1.

Produced under Interscope Recordsthis 10-track album features a collection of impeccably covered Cole Porter songs accompanied by the Brian Newman Quintet. Love for Sale is the pair’s second and last duet album, succeeding their 2014 release, “Cheek to Cheek.”

Given Bennett’s age and declining health, this album marks the end of his 70-year music career. The vocalist was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease back in 2016, but he has continued to perform music live despite his diagnosis. According to Susan Benedetto, Bennett's wife, his medical team encouraged him to continue working on his music. With the release of the Cole Porter tribute, Bennett broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album at the age of 95.

The album opener, “It’s De-Lovely” sets the tone for the album with its swift instrumentals and classic sounds of jazz. Gaga’s classic vocals combined with Bennett’s raspy voice make for a perfect combination.

The third track of the album with the same name, “Love for Sale” begins with a slow piano solo accompanied by Bennett’s … Gaga showcases her vocal range in this song as she alternates between low and high pitches to match the shifting jazz tempo.

“Do I Love You,” one of the two solo tracks performed by Lady Gaga, encapsulates her musical talent and versatility. The song features just the right amount of dramatic lyricism combined with Gaga’s smooth vocals that effortlessly carry the listener through the song.

“Do I Love You” was first written by Porter for his musical “Du Barry Was a Lady.” Originally released in 1939, the jazz composition has remained popular throughout the years as it has been re-recorded several times since by numerous artists including Ella Fitzgerald and Frankie Vaughn. Gaga and Bennett have been added to the list of cover artists after including this timeless tune in their latest album.

Even if you aren’t a big fan of jazz, this collaborative effort by two well-established artist is an undeniable masterpiece. It is a beautiful tribute to the American composer and songwriter Cole Porter, who was a huge player in the development of the jazz genre since he began creating music in the early 1920s. Even after Porter’s death in 1964, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett keep his music alive with “Love for Sale.”
