The 62nd annual Grammy Awards were held in late January, coincidentally the same day as Kobe Bryant’s death and at the same location, Staples Center, that his team calls home. Multiple tributes were made to honor the celebrity.

Hosted by Alicia Keys, the Grammys recognizes the best recorders, composers and artists of the year. There are 30 award fields and 84 different distinct award categories in those fields. Of all the artists, Lizzo was nominated for the most, a total of eight different categories. She was followed by Billie Eilish, who herself was nominated for a total of six categories.

Eilish’s 2019 debut album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” earned her the nominations when she only 17 years old, making her the youngest artist in Grammy history to be nominated for all four general categories in the same year. The general field category includes “Album of the Year,” “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year” and “Best New Artist.” General awards do not restrict nominations to certain genres of music or other criteria like the more specific categories. She was also nominated for “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Pop Solo Performance.”

The track “Bad Guy” earned Eilish the “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Solo Performance” nominations. Her album earned her the “Album of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Album” nominations. Eilish was also nominated for “Best New Artist.”

When it came time to announcing the winners, Eilish cleaned up. She ended up winning all four of the general field awards, as well as “Best Pop Vocal Album.” Lizzo was able to best Eilish for “Best Pop Solo Performance” for her song, “Truth Hurts.”

During the ceremony, Eilish could be seen mouthing the words, “please don’t be me,” right before her fourth Grammy win of the night. Eilish herself said she believed Ariana Grande deserved the award more for her album, “Thank U, Next.” Eilish would go on to win a fifth later that night.
With her Grammy wins, Eilish has set a myriad of records. At only 39 days over 18, she is the youngest solo artist to win “Album of the Year,” beating Taylor Swift’s record of 49 days past her 20th birthday.

Taking all four of the general field awards has elevated Eilish to two very exclusive lists of artists. Only three artists in history have won all four general field awards: Christopher Cross, Adele and Eilish herself. Only two artists in history have won all four awards in the same night: Cross in 1981 and Eilish almost 40 years later.

The Grammys had many artists provide tributes to Kobe Bryant, as well as for rapper Nipsey Hussle and Prince.
