On Sept. 14 an Instagram page posted for the first time, quickly grew a following, and is a joke between students at Edinboro. The page, @boroaffirmations, will post affirmations or encouraging thoughts to strive for. It contains a mix of students requests and ideas and the account owners own creations.

“I have a whole master list of ideas for these,” the owner said, while showing the Spectator a notes app filled with potential ideas and posts.

The account owner chose to remain silent, but not due to privacy or worry. “It’s fun to leave little clues and trails,” they said. “I have people messaging me a lot saying ‘please never come forward - it’s really fun trying to guess who it is’,” they said. “A lot of people don’t want to know who I am.”

When it came to starting the page, the owner was more than prepared. “I love to make people laugh. Then I saw other affirmation posts for colleges and really thought this would be cool.”

The account owner waited a few weeks after school started to see if anyone would start a page themselves, and when no one started they took charge.

“It’s my dream to write for something like SNL, I wanna be a comedy writer,” they said. “Making people laugh, that’s what inspired me.”

When asked about concerns when starting, only one came to mind. “I really didn’t think it would take off at all, or if it did, I thought it would take a long time to take off.” Currently the page has 715 followers, after posting for just over a month and two weeks.

The owner also explained they believe in the right to parody. “I believe in the right to poke fun at everything,” they said. “I like to poke fun at everything around campus, I take different people’s jokes into account, nobody is safe.”

"Having that ability is important, being able to laugh at yourself and your establishment," explained the owner. Who further went on to explain that they enjoy the kind direct messages from fans and students. Boroaffirmations posts daily, with student requests taken in and appreciated.
