COVID-19 report, Feb. 26: Edinboro faces case spike, 51 positives this week by Emma McNeeley

Since Feb. 22, Edinboro University has logged 51 new cases of COVID-19 (50 students, 1 employee). In the previous six weeks tracked in 2021, there was a total of 17 cases. The university sent out an email on Feb. 26, which read: "Over the last 7 days, there has been an upward trend in our positive cases of COVID-19 among students. Student Health Services has been working diligently to support testing, quarantining and isolation to help minimize the spread." Referencing the possibility of a 10-day pause for in-person campus activities (including classes), the email reads, "This is not a choice we want to make, but it may be necessary to protect the health and safety of our community."

Finally, the email states that the university's contact tracing "has not revealed any evidence of transmission from in-person instruction." But, the 10-day pause would be out of an "abundance of caution for our students and faculty."

Previously, on Feb. 22, the university sent out an email that commented on reported off-campus gatherings and that EU "has concurrently seen an uptick in positive COVID-19 cases." Further, it read, "The irresponsible behaviors of a few can have major consequences for the entire community, as evidenced at other institutions that have been forced to halt in-person classes due to spikes in COVID cases."

The Spectator is working on a full report on the case spike.
