Student volunteers from Edinboro University teamed up to give back to the community for this year’s Random Acts of Kindness in Edinboro (RAKE) event, held on Saturday, Nov. 13.

According to the Campus Life office, who organizes the annual event, volunteers were assigned specific homes throughout the Edinboro community where they cleaned up yards by gathering and bagging leaves. RAKE is a part of the Edinboro community outreach program, aimed at getting students involved in the local community.

Community members were encouraged to register to have their yard raked by the student volunteers. Individuals who are elderly and/or disabled were given priority.

Several groups from the university, including sisters from the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, students from the Honors College, Edinboro athletes and more, got involved. The event resulted in hundreds of bagged leaves just in time for winter.

Crista Herbert, freshman at Edinboro, took part in RAKE to gain volunteer hours for the honors college. “I thought RAKE was a great opportunity to help people in the Edinboro community while still getting my volunteer hours,” she said.

“This event is important for the community because it connects volunteers and community members. It also is rewarding because most of the neighbors who sign up to get their yards raked are no longer physically able to rake their entire yard.”
