The Edinboro community mourned the loss this week of a community and university leader, John Horan, who passed away Thursday, Feb. 26.

Horan served as a lead figure throughout his 16 years as Edinboro member of the University Council of Trustees. He also served as chairman from 2011 to 2015. In an email sent to students, Interim President David J. Werner addressed Horan’s attributes and “tremendous” benefit to the university.

“He always made the best interest of Edinboro students his first priority in the role.”

“Mr. Horan was one of us, a Fighting Scot at heart who proudly wore the tartan and regularly attended university events, as recently as last Friday, when he attended the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon. Those who worked with him most closely attest to his integrity and personal warmth,” Werner wrote.

Director of Facilities Management and Planning Michael Hilbert also addressed the entire campus community in regards to what actions would be taken on-campus to honor Horan passing.

“In response to a request by President Werner, we have lowered the Edinboro University flags at the police station, Pogue Student Center, and Reeder Hall to half-staff to honor John Horan,” he said.

Such flags will remain at half-staff until after the burial services.

“As a member of the Edinboro University Council of Trustees for the last 16 years and chairman from 2011 to 2015, John Horan provided exceptional leadership to the university,” Hilbert said.
