Saturday afternoon saw the Fighting Scots women’s basketball team take to the road and win big at Slippery Rock, 88-59. This was their first road trip since upsetting California University over winter break.

Edinboro came roaring out of the gates in the first quarter, shutting Slippery Rock out for the most part in a 25-6 effort. Both teams scored heavily in the second, with the Scots going into the half leading 47-31.

In the second half, both teams played a more defensive game, but Edinboro maintained the lead.

The women’s team has been steadily picking up steam throughout the season, with their momentum showing no signs of stopping. Bella Burrelli talked about how the younger players have fit into the team environment and assisted in this effort. “I feel like all of the freshman class, myself included, have felt very comfortable playing on the team. Our team has grown tremendously these last few weeks on the court, and I do feel like it’s because of our relationship off the court.”

Notable performances included PSAC 3-point leader Bridgette Shaffer, who sunk five 3-point shots and scored 19 points overall. Michaela Barnes led the team in scoring with 25 points.

The team will play Mercyhurst on Wednesday (after print deadline) in another away game.

“I think the momentum will continue to the Mercyhurst game,” said Burrelli.

“They are a good team and we are ready to prepare for them this upcoming week.”

The Fighting Scots carried a 10-7 overall record to Mercyhurst, who were 5-14 before Wednesday’s contest.
