On Feb. 28, the Edinboro women’s basketball team notched an 89-45 win over California University of Pennsylvania in the PSAC playoffs quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots had the home court advantage as the contest took place at McComb Fieldhouse.

A quick foul would put Edinboro’s Jontay Walton at the line for two, which she converted. These two buckets would open a scoring run that would last 15 points.

Cal’s Jiahna Floodfrancis put the first points on the board for the Vulcans with 2:54 left on the clock in the first quarter, which made the score 15-2. Cal would score two more points before the end of the first, but a 3-pointer from Ayana Vaughn put Edinboro up 18-4 going into the second.

The second stanza opened with quick points from Edinboro’s Michelle Jahn and Ciara Rosten. Cal’s Abbey Sporio would score with 7:53 left on the clock in the first half, but Edinboro went on another scoring run for the next six minutes.

With less than two minutes left on the clock, Vulcan Bebe George put up rare points to bring the score to 35-8. The Scots would be up by 30 at the end of the first half.

As the second half of the game began, Edinboro started off as they had in the second quarter, putting together a scoring run that would last until DJ Hahn sunk a 3-pointer for the Vulcans. Cal put up a total of 14 more points in the quarter, but Edinboro would still have the lead at the end of the third with a score of 66-27.

Jahn said in an interview after the game that she felt the team’s biggest asset was their ability to mesh with each other after a long season.

“We play really well together,” she said. “We come to practice every day and work really hard.”

Edinboro had a slower start to the fourth quarter, scoring only four points in the first few minutes. A foul committed by Vaughn put Cal’s Gina Vallecorsa at the line for two to bring the score to 71-29. With a little less than five minutes left on the clock, Suckling would convert a fast break and put up another two points for Cal, which would spark a minute-long back-and-forth scoring match between the two teams.

With 3:02 left, Cal would reach 40 points in the game with a 3-pointer from Vallecorsa.

Jahn led the Scots with 21 points. She also scored her 1,000th career point in this game. With the win, Edinboro advanced to the final four in the PSAC playoffs.

Although Edinboro took the win in this game, the players noted that they still had room to improve individually.

“I’m going to get into the gym and get up some extra shots so I’ll be on for the next game,” stated Barnes in an interview after the game.
