Women’s tennis tops Mercyhurst by Michael McLaughlin
All four squads, both single and tandem, were eliminated in second round matches.

Eight members of the Edinboro University women’s tennis team took part in day one of the 2016 ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Mercyhurst University. The Fighting Scots had three doubles teams and four singles players advance to the second round of the three-day tournament.

The tandems of Tatiana Batalla Trabal/ Julia Hellstern, Roxana Yeh/Laura Lopez, and Anastasiya Dasik/Jelena Vucenovic reached the doubles second round. Batalla and Hellstern, and Yeh and Lopez, each edged their opponents by 8-6 and 9-7 scores, respectively. Dasik and Vucenovic breezed to an 8-1 win over West Chester’s Rylee Power and Gracyn Towler. All three Edinboro teams were eliminated in their second-round matches.

Dasik, Yeh, Lopez and Marija Tmusic all advanced to the singles second round. Dasik and Tmusic each rallied from a one- set deficit versus Indiana (Pa.)’s Mariana Valenzuela and Charleston’s Taylor Youell, respectively. All four Fighting Scots were defeated in their second-round matches. An injury to Julia Hellstern caused her to forfeit her opening-round match to Slippery Rock’s Kylee Woodman in the first set tied at 3-3. Hellstern had advanced to the round of 16 in last year’s regional championships.

The Sunday leg of competition will feature Vucenovic and Batalla competing in the second round of consolation singles. Vucenovic defeated West Chester’s Abriana Nolan, 8-4, while Batalla beat Slippery Rock’s Allie Welch, 8-3, in their first-round consolation match.

The doubles team of Rice and Tmusic will square off against West Chester’s Nolan and Stephanie Cifarelli in the first round of consolation doubles Sunday.
