The Edinboro Fighting Scots and new head wrestling coach Matt Hill hosted the Red vs. White scrimmage Oct. 25 in the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome. This was the first official chance the public got to see the 2018-19 Fighting Scots in action, and the wrestlers did not disappoint the 150 faithful fans in attendance.

For a scrimmage, the matches were highly contested.

“The problem with scrimmages is sometimes you get guys too familiar with one another, so either they exploit every weakness...or they just end up countering each other so well,” Hill said.

Here is how it went down:

125: Lucas Rodriguez vs. Arick Shankles

Rodriguez would win this one in a minor decision by a 3-1 margin. The match was back and forth for three periods. Rodriguez scored first at the end of the first period on a single-leg takedown, good for 2 points. Shankles would answer back in the second with an escape, but Rodriguez would seal the deal by getting an escape of his own to bring the final score to 3-1.

133: Richie Gomez vs. Avery Henry

Gomez would get the technical fall over Henry in the second period by a score of 17-2. This match featured a good performance from Gomez, who was quick on his takedowns.

141: Carmine Ciotti vs. Nate Hagan

Ciotti, the Gannon University transfer, would take out Hagan by a score of 2-0 in one of the better fought matches of the night.

141: PJ Gohn vs. Jackie Gold

Gohn would edge out Gold by a score of 8-7 with the last point coming on an escape.

149: Tyler Vath vs. Christopher Matzke

This match was another shot fest from these two wrestlers, but Vath came out with the win by a score of 8-7.

157: Matt Dowler vs. Mike Resignalo

Dowler would defeat Resignalo by a score of 5-0. Resignalo was unable to get his offense going in this match as Dowler countered everything he threw.

157: Peter Pappas vs. Tim Suter

Pappas was deadly, hitting an ankle pick almost at will. He would defeat Suter by a score of 17-12.

174: Zach Ancewicz vs. Jacob Oliver

In a back and forth battle, Ancewicz would win by a score of 3-1 thanks to a takedown and escape in the third period.

197/184: Dylan Reynolds vs Cody Mulligan

This was the most anticipated match of the night. Both wrestlers came to prove what they had. Reynolds is on his senior campaign while Mulligan is the highly touted incoming freshman. The match would go into full overtime to decide, where it was Reynolds getting his hand raised by the slim margin of 3-2.

Hill would state after the match that several weights have yet to be decided and those decisions would be made in the coming weeks as the Scots compete in the Michigan State Open on Saturday.
