Solo Mio is a film about Matt Taylor, played by Kevin James, who is set to get married in Rome, but whose fiancée leaves him at the altar. The film follows James as he tries to get over the heartbreak in Rome and in the process, gets a new outlook on life.
This film is a romantic comedy, and it should be your Valentine's Day movie of choice. James gives a great performance in a role that is mostly serious, which is a very different from the comedic roles he usually does. He isn’t the only cast member who shines. His supporting cast is phenomenal. Nicole Grimaudo, who plays Gia, the female lead in this film, does a standout job and plays off James very well. Jonathan Roumie, Kim Coates, Alyson Hannigan, and Julee Cerda, who play friends he makes while in Rome, blend seamlessly with the rest of the cast; they feel like real friends.
I have never been to Italy personally, but this film made me want to visit. It showcases the beauty of the country from Rome to Tuscany, making viewers jealous they aren’t in Italy. While it highlights less desirable aspects, such locals pickpocketing tourists, I appreciated that realistic detail, which I did not know about.
While music plays a less important a role in this film, the Italian soundtrack is enjoyable.
The story of Solo Mio is heartbreaking at times, but it is overall a feel-good romance movie with quite a bit of comedic bits that had me laughing quite hard. The film also had me crying at one point. The story has a twist or two, including one near the end of the film, but they work super well and make the story much better.
My one complain with Solo Mio is that it is not long enough. I don’t say this often because movies are often too long, but this one could have benefited from being longer. The film is 1 hour and 30 minutes, but an extra 30 minutes would let some scenes breathe a little more.
If you are looking for a movie night with your date this Valentine’s Day weekend, I highly recommend Solo Mio. It is also a good watch if you are single. Unlike most romcoms that sometimes make single people feel even lonelier, the movie offers a new outlook on like that makes you feel like you can have fun while being single. For someone who’s single, I felt less lonely after watching it. Solo Mio is a great film from start to end that will have you laughing and feeling good. I give Solo Mio a 9/10.

A lot of times in life, we can get so caught up in what happened in the past, our traumas, our struggles, and our mistakes. In late October, I attended a Fall Retreat with PennWest Edinboro’s Chi Alpha where I learned that letting go of the need for perfection and practicing mindfulness is a powerful way to reconnect with my sense of self-worth. |
